hello, and welcome to my review of OMORI
"what is OMORI?"
OMORI is an indie RPG developed by OMOCAT
its a game with a ritch story, verry unique and colorful artstyle, and a fun battle system with unique mechanics
OMORI is a game about, well, a kid named OMORI and his friends, KEL, AUBREY, HERO, MARI, and BASIL, going on cute colorful adventures
however, one day things start getting wierd, and on a visit to BASIL's house, he dissapears!
its now up to OMORI and friends to find him on a long quest
but not all is as it seems, the longer you spend in this strange world the more odd things you will see, things not as colorful as the rest, things you wernt suposed to see...
yeah lets not beat around the bush, its one of them "RPG games with theames of depression" type games, witch in the indie sene may have gotten a bit stale in recent years
HOWEVER
i think OMORI is verry unique in how it handles itself
yasee, its quickly uncovered that the world of OMORI is a dream, but its not that simple, when you wake up, you take in the shoes of SUNNY, the one haveing the dream
SUNNY is a simple kid whom is moveing out of his hometown in a few days, a town witch he has lived all his life
soon enough you realize that this "dream world" isnt all fantacy and made up, its largely based off of SUNNY's past life from a few years pior
when you are awake, you get to explore SUNNY's town and see how the present reflects uppon the past and his dreams
as you play the game you are inclined to ask some questions, mainly, why does SUNNY keep haveing dreams of years long ago? what happened between the now and then and why is everyone acting so wierd? and just what is hidden beneath teh surfase of all the sunshine?
that, dear reader, is for you to find out, if this sounds interesting to you i highly incline you to try it out yourself
but mabey you have a few more questions? allright then let me tell you about some other good qualities of this game
"yeah yeah cool story, but whats the gameplay like?"
the gameplay of OMORI largely takes part in the dream world, tho the other side also has its fair share of gameplay, tho those sections are a bit more plot-focused
the gameplay is largely your standard turn-based RPG, you have a party of 4, OMORI, KEL, AUBREY, and HERO, each one filling a unique role in the team, but lets explain a bit of the basics first
the main, unique mechanic of OMORI is EMOTIONS (yes, litteraly, bear with me), EMOTIONS come in three diffrent varieties, SAD, HAPPY, and ANGRY, as well as NEUTRAL (witch doesnt do anything)
you'll start every battle with all party members NEUTRAL, however, once you give them an EMOTION they're stats will change depending on what was given
SAD will increase your DEFENCE, but reduce your SPEED, its a good option for tanking hits in longer battles
HAPPY will increase your SPEED and LUCK but reduces your HIT RATE, makeing you hit less often, but makeing you crit more often, a risk reward
ANGRY will increase your ATTACK, but decrease your DEFENCE, makeing you verry strong but verry vonurable, there arnt many things in the game that increase ATTACK besides ANGRY
but thats not all! not only can you be effected by thease EMOTIONS, so can your enemies! they'll try to affect thier own EMOTIONS *and* yours to try and give themselves an advantage!
but worry not, you can fight right back with that, as you can effect thier EMOTIONS too!
but why all this EMOTION effecting? what is this? some kinda odd form of theraphy?
well, not only do EMOTIONS effect your stats, but also how you fight
certain emotions will deal more damage to others, kinda like pokemon types
ANGRY, for example, will deal extra damage aganst SAD enemies, while SAD will deal less damage to ANGRY enemies
ANGRY beats SAD, SAD beats HAPPY, and HAPPY beats ANGRY, like a game of rock paper sissors but more complicated
"man this all sounds kinda complex"
i know, i know, its a lot to take in, but it'll get easyer as you go trough the game, its a verry long adventure (like 20-50 hours) so youll have plenty of time to get fammilair with the mechanics
that is the main mechanic of the game, EMOTIONS, howeverr if ya still wanna hear more about the gameplay, stick around, otherwise i suggest you move ontro the next section about art

another unique mechanic of OMORI is the "FOLLOW-UP" mechanic
have you ever felt like you only ever use your spesicial abilities and never your regulair attacks? well FOLLOW-UPS are a mechanic when doing basic attacks, they basically make you do an extra attack by working with another party member
let me give an example, if your doing an attack with HERO, you have the option to do a FOLLOW-UP attack with KEL, this means HERO gives KEL a boost, restoreing some health and makeing KEL do an additional attack
or mabey you attack with AUBREY, and do a FOLLOW-UP with OMORI, in that case OMORI gives some encouragement, makeing AUBREY get the HAPPY status and do an extra attack, twise as powerful!
each charicter has thier own FOLLOW-UPS with other party members,makeing you really work together as a team!
however, FOLLOW-UPS are not free, they cost ENERGY, ENERGY is a bit like tension points, whenevr a party member gets hit, you gain 1 ENERGY, and useing a FOLLOW-UP costs 3 ENERGY
basically: basic attacks allow you to do bonus teamwork attacks, the more ya get hit the more teamwork attacks you can do for crazy comebacks, theres even an ultimate attack OMORI can perform called "RELEASE ENERGY", it costs 10 ENERGY but deals absolute massive damage but increases all stats
"but hey, whats the party like?"
ah yes, let me tell you about what every party member's core skills are
OMORI: this quiet kid is a jack of all trades, master of none
he's got verry high amounts of every stat, high ATTACK, SPEED, DEFENCE, HEART, JUICE, LUCK, everything!
there isnt one stat that really stands out, he's just good at everything and your strongest party member! be careful tho... if he goes down, its game over!
his special abilities center around the EMOTION mechanic, an example being an ability that lowers the enemies SPEED, useful on its own, but extra effective aganst HAPPY enemies, makeing thier stat boost nullified!
another is an ability that deals a basic attack but ignores enemy DEFENCE, but if OMORI is SAD, it dreals a garanteed crit!
generally OMORI is the most powerful of the four, and will be dealing a good chunk of damage with some added support, hopwever, that doesnt mean the others arnt useful either!
KEL: this speedy shortie will kick off battles blazing
he specializes in haveing a lot of SPEED, LUCK, and JUICE! with moderate ATTACK but low DEFENCE and HEART
KEL is a speed demon, out-speeding almost every enemy in the game at a general level, he will be the first to act in battles, giving you a great advantage
his high JUICE allows him to use lots of special moves, sutch as giving certain EMOTIONs to enemies or friends, starting battles off with powerful attacks, or giving his friends advantages by proving them with crits
however, while his initial startup is quite strong, he'ms also quite fragile, haveing the lowest DEFENCE and HEART, thus you need to take good care he doesnt get caught up in his own confidence
whilest his abilities are strong and his SPEED quite good, he needs some help from his team to stay afloat
AUBREY: this joyful gal has a big heart and hits with just as big damage
she specializes in verry high ATTACK and HEART, with moderate DEFENCE and SPEED, but low LUCK and JUICE
AUBREY is quite tanky by herself, boasting the highest HEART of the party, as she also has the highest ATTACK, she lands quite a lot of damage even with just some basic attacks
however her JUICE is quite low, makeing her special moves needs quite a lot of constant refills in order to stay at full power, but when she uses them, they hit HARD, cutting trough enemies and bosses alike with unmatched power
she may have some troubble truely getting all her action out, but even just at a base level she does big hits and can simulairly take big ones as well, just go forth and SMASH!
HERO: the mentor and protector of everyone, and the best chef ever and a charmer at that
he specializes in DEFENCE, JUICE, and HEART, but has horrible SPEED and ATTACK, but thats allright, he's supporter, not a fighter
HERO is the healer of the party, but unlike your typical RPG, is quite tanky, makeing him really good at keepoing everyone,m includeing himself, alive
while hes slow and doesnt quite fight, he can retore lots of HEART to everyone quickly, furthermore, he is a charmer, even to the enemies, allowing him to avert damage from his friends ontro himself, dont worry he can take it
his chefs skills make sure the party is contantly ready for the next attack, helping them stay alive and replenished, hes a kind guy whom just wants to help everyone out
and there ya have it, our main herops of the story, youll be getting more fmailair with them as you play, and each ahs thier unique part in the team!
